Abstract
Reliable ultra-deep drilling in the Tarim Shunbei oil and gas field is constrained by high temperature and pressure, hard and interbedded formations, fractured loss zones, small-diameter wellbores, and severe drill-string dynamics. These conditions couple drilling efficiency with the health of bits, screw motors, measurement-while-drilling (MWD) instruments, and bottom-hole assemblies. This paper reorganizes reported drilling and completion practices from an equipment-health monitoring perspective. Field evidence from three rock-breaking configurations and one small-diameter directional-drilling system is used as the engineering baseline. The enhanced hybrid-bit and high-torque screw-motor configuration increased bit life by 65% and raised rate of penetration (ROP) from 1.85 to 2.54 m/h. A shaped-tooth PDC-bit configuration increased single-trip footage from 458 to 1,285 m and ROP from 3.32 to 5.45 m/h. A diabase-oriented configuration increased footage from 125 to 323 m and ROP from 1.24 to 2.79 m/h. For small-diameter directional drilling, the reported MWD failure rate decreased from 21% to 12%. On this basis, a multi-source vibration-sensing and intelligent-diagnosis framework is proposed. Near-bit vibration and angular-rate measurements are synchronized with surface weight on bit, torque, rotary speed, standpipe pressure, hook load, ROP, trajectory, and temperature data. Condition-normalized time-frequency indicators then support recognition of stick-slip, whirl, impact overload, bit wear, motor degradation, and MWD instability under variable working conditions. Because the reported field records do not contain a complete synchronized and labeled vibration dataset, the diagnostic workflow is presented as a testable framework rather than a validated classifier.
