Introduction

The immense generation of biological waste would overwhelm the capacity of our governmental infrastructures. It is thus crucial to introduce additional and sustainable treatment options by enlisting efforts and innovations from the local/private recycling industry. Therefore, using food waste as a cheap raw material for production of value-added marketable products presents as the dominating trend in the future. Such valorization practice also proffers great opportunity to sustain our recycling business by boosting a circular bioeconomy.

Knowledge exchange/transfer is the pioneering step to develop novel solutions for Hong Kong and place around the world to solve the organic waste problem. There has been a surge of interest in innovative recycling and recovery within the international research field confronting the growing global waste issue.

Following the success of the BWR2015, this conference continues to transfer the up-to-date knowledge and information to the local experts to stimulate new thoughts and foster a custom-made engineering/management solution for Hong Kong. It will deliberate recycling and recovery of a wide diversity of organic wastes (e.g., food waste, yard and wood waste, sewage sludge, animal manure, plant residues) from a comprehensive perspective embracing the technical, financial, social and political viability.

Themes of Conference

  • Food waste recycling
  • Sludge treatment
  • Agricultural waste processing
  • Waste and biomass valorization
  • Biochar/compost production and application
  • Catalytic conversion of organic waste
  • Life cycle assessment on biological waste management
  • Ecological impacts and toxicity of recycling and recovery practices
  • Fate of heavy metals, PAHs, PPCPs, EDCs and nanoparticles in treatment and recycling
