This paper presents a direct voltage detection architecture that can be used for wideband linear-in-magnitude envelope detectors. A pre-amplifier using a common-gate (CG) common-source (CS) circuit topology sends the input modulated signal to a differential output and is coupled to a pair of common source stages. The envelope signal is then acquired by using the nonlinear characteristics of the MOSFET to achieve wide frequency response and low power performance. The envelope detector was designed and simulated using a standard 0.18 um CMOS technology. The detector can operate from 0.8 GHz to 3 GHz and has a linear conversion gain with a dynamic range of 26 dB and 270 MHz operating bandwidth (1 dB detection error). It consumes 18 mW of power at 1.8 V power supply.
