The effect of metal loading into ZSM-5 catalysts for the production of light olefins from cellulose by catalytic fast pyrolysis was carried out in a fixed bed. In this study, Fe, La, Cu, Mg, Al and Ce/ZSM-5 were prepared by impregnation method, the characterization of metal modified ZSM-5 catalysts were also investigated by XRD, NH3-TPD, H2-TPR and BET analysis, and the correlations between acid sites distribution of catalysts and the generation of light olefins were explored. The results showed that the structure of catalyst was still kept intact in the addition of metal loading, and the surface area, pore volume and the amount of acid sites of catalysts varied. The total acid sites increased with the addition of metal (except for Al) and new acid sites formed, which resulted in a higher light olefins yield. The maximum yield was obtained over Cu/ZSM-5, and Mg/ZSM-5 produced the lowest. Moreover, the generation of light olefins was mainly affected by medium acid site.
