Cerium (Ce) -modified Cu/Zn/Al catalysts were synthesized by co-precipitation method. The modified catalysts were further used in supercritical methanol to liquefy microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). The characterization results show that the catalyst precursor was hydrotalcite (HT)-layered double hydroxides (LDH), the addition of Ce has improved the dispersion of active sites, and then increased the specific surface area and the catalytic activity of the catalysts, however the excessive of Ce has generated CeO2 crystal on the surface of the catalyst, reduced the surface activity and the catalytic performance. Compared to Cu1.2Zn4.8Al2.0, Cu1.2Zn4.8Al1.9Ce0.1 exhibited a higher catalytic activity. The latter also brought a conversion rate of MCC of 87.58% and a yield of alcohols of 88.29%, increasing by 17.66% and 56.92% respectively, compared to the former.
