Preparation of biofuel additives from bioethanol and CO2

With the consumption of fossil fuels, the synthesis of traditional fuel additives faces many problems because the traditional fuel additives always use petrochemical-based materials as the substrates thus causing environmental pollution. Therefore, it is necessary to find potential alternatives with fully renewable resources to synthetize bio-based fuel additives. In our study, the biofuel additive product-polycarbonate polyols with high efficiency and sustainable property was synthesized by using the ethanol and carbon dioxide as substrates. Firstly, the catalyst was prepared with the method of co-precipitation, and then, ethanol from biomass materials and CO2 were used to synthesize diethyl carbonate by the catalyst. After the optimization of catalyst preparation conditions and the adjustment of synthesis influencing factors, the obtained highest yield of diethyl carbonate was 3.44mg/ml and the selectivity of catalyst reached 85%. Then, the carbonate polyols by diethyl carbonate and polyols as the substrates both with biocatalytic and chemical catalytic method. For biocatalytic method, neopentyl glycol or trimethylolpropane reactes with diethyl carbonate were used as substrates catalyzed by lipase The conversion efficiency and the yield reached 25% and 35% respectively. For chemical catalytic method, 1,6-hexanediol was used to react with diethyl carbonate which catalyzed by alkali and the conversion efficiency as well as the yield reached 25% and 91%, respectively. In the research and development of this synthesis, the biofuel additive with high oxygen content was proposed. In addition, the green biocatalytic conversion technology was used in the preparation of biofuel additive, which provided beneficial guidance for the utilization of completely renewable resources.
