Preparation of Ru/modified-vermiculite catalyst for hydrogenation of levulinic acid for biofuel production

Ru/modified-Vermiculite was prepared via adsorption-precipitation method, using a organic-pillared vermiculite support obtained via acid-treated, sodium modification,proceeding with organic cation exchange and RuCl-3.xH2O as precursor. The catalytic performances was tested for the hydrogenation of levulinic acid and XRD, H2-TPR, N2 physical adsorption were applied to character the texture properties and chemical properities. It was observed that the catalytic performance of the samples reduced directly were better than the catalysts subjected to the calcinations-reduction treatment. The catalytic activity for Ru/modified-Vermiculite obtained via a reduction-oxidation-reduction cycle was higher than the Ru/Al2O3 treated with the same process. The characterization data show that the Ru nanoparticles on the modified-Vermiculite were less agglomerated than the Ru/Al2O3. These results confirmed the stability ofRu/m-Vermiculite was better than Ru/Al2O3.
