Study abroad (SA) as a new linguistic context is receiving increasing attention in the field of second language acquisition. It is assumed that SA ensures high levels of interaction in the target language. Interaction with native speakers that occurred within the social networks leads to language gains. Group context and group dynamics are important factors to consider when examining the effectiveness of interaction. This study investigates the impact of social networking in a wider society and interaction in small groups on language gains during SA. We focus on the learners’ perspectives by using self-reports. 16 students engaged in the study and reported their reflections upon the completion of a group work or the social network they formed. It is found that a strong social networks and a frequent use of the target language are much less than expected. The majority of interactions occurs online and between nonnative speakers.SA is a changing scenario, so are the gains as a result of SA. (161)
