Functional groups (FGs) are key constituents of molecules that play a crucial role in determine their physical and chemical properties. Typical FGs include olefins, alkynes, aromatics, carboxylic acids, etc., predominantly composed of four elements, namely C, H, N, and O. Nevertheless, current research on the development and design of novel FGs has largely lagged behind. To address the scientific challenge of constructing novel FGs, the design and synthesis of FGs has garnered attention from the perspective of augmenting their constituent components. Consequently, there has been an emergence of diverse FGs incorporating P, B, S, Si, etc.. We are interested in phosphorus-containing FGs due to the fact that phosphorus is located in the same main group as nitrogen, is adjacent to carbon diagonally, and is a third-period element. Therefore, phosphorus containing FGs have the potential to exhibit diverse physicochemical properties that offer diverse reactivities and extensive applications. However, the number of phosphorus-containing FGs is relatively limited in comparison to those traditional organic FGs, indicating a lack of extensive research in this area. Recently, we have succeeded in preparing several previously unknow phosphorus-containing FGs, such as phosphaketene, N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) stabilized phosphaisonitrile, NHCs stabilized dicarbondiphosphide, and cyanophosphide. These compounds have manifested diverse reactivities and have served as synthons in synthetic chemistry for novel phosphorus-containing molecules that hardly accessible from other methods.
