The beampattern synthesis problem is an attractive topic in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems, whereas demands of orthogonal waveform emission make it difficult in practical engineering. Different from conventional collocated MIMO radars, space-time coding array (STCA) can provide a full spatial illumination with a stable gain by transmitting an identical waveform. A basic STCA utilizes linearly increasing time shifts to offer a full angular coverage. In this paper, we propose a new beampattern design method by optimizing the time shift value via the particle swarm optimization algorithm. As a resort to solve the beampattern design issue, the integration sidelobe level of the transmit beampattern is minimized, and a uniform elemental power constraint is enforced in the mainlobe regions. The proposed beampattern synthesis can provide excellent properties in terms of low sidelobe level, stable gains, low computational complexity. The constant modulus can be readily guaranteed. Numerical results can demonstrate the effectiveness and simplicity of the proposed algorithm.
