Abstract
In the summer of 2020, heavy rainfall occurred in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, resulting in a severe flood. The flood was listed as one of the country’s top 10 natural disasters for 2020 by China’s Ministry of Emergency Management. Therefore, it is important to monitoring the high frequency of flood changes and knowing well the flood storage potential of lakes and reservoirs. In this study, we derived water surface area and volume change of 363 lakes and reservoirs with an area above 1 km2 in the Poyang Lake basin (one of the areas affected by the 2020 severe flood) based on Sentinel-1, SRTM DEM, GRACE-FO, and bathymetry data. The presented throughout of the results enabled to evaluation for flood storage potential of lakes and reservoirs in the Poyang Lake Basin. On the basis of Sentinel-1 SAR data in high-frequency time series, we accurately captured the abrupt change in water surface area of Poyang Lake during the flood event in July in this study.
