Abstract
This work looks at the feasible PWM techniques for a five-phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (5Ф-PMSM) with a single-phase open-circuited. The 5Ф-PMSM particularly suits the long travel segment-powered linear motor system largely thanks to its high thrust and good fault-tolerant capacity. Before enabling these advantages, one basic issue regarding the fault-tolerant PWM technique is worth an in-depth discussion. In light of this, this paper develops three types of PWM techniques, i.e., sinusoidal PWM (SPWM), space vector PWM (SVPWM), and min-max carrier-based PWM (min-max CBPWM), such that the fault-tolerant control can well accommodate the state-of-the-art field-oriented control (FOC) philosophy. Merits and demerits in terms of DC voltage utilization, harmonic current content, and complexity are comparatively studied via simulation and experiment.
