Background: Both hyperuricemia and hyperglycemia are involved in hyperlipidemia, while the interaction between them on hyperlipidemia is currently not revealed. The purpose of this study is to explore the interaction between hyperuricemia and hyperglycemia on hyperlipidemia.

Methods: The subjects of this study were come from the Health Management Center of the Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University from 2017 to 2019. This study tested interaction between hyperuricemia and hyperglycemia on hyperlipidemia among 3790 persons living with hyperlipidemia and 7451 persons living with Non-hyperlipidemia. The presence of additive interaction was assessed based on the Relative Excess Risk due to Interaction (RERI), Attributable Proportion (AP) and Synergy index (S).

Results: Compared to the participants with Non-hyperuricemia and Non-hyperglycemia, those who had hyperuricemia with Non-hyperglycemia had an elevated risk of hyperlipidemia with OR [95%CI] =1.64 [1.50, 1.79]; The risk was further increased for those who had hyperuricemia with hyperglycemia with OR [95%CI] = 3.79 [3.08, 4.67]. Results from additive interaction indicated RERI [95%CI] =0.88 [0.04, 1.72], AP [95%CI] = 0.23[0.05, 0.41] and S [95%CI] = 1.46 [1.05, 2.03].

Conclusion: Hyperuricemia and hyperglycemia had a synergistic additive interaction on hyperlipidemia, and their co-existence can significantly increase the risk of hyperlipidemia, which can provide evidence for the prevention and control of hyperlipidemia.
