After more than ten years of water level fluctuations from 145-175m, the rock mass in the water-level fluctuation zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir area has obvious rock mass deterioration, which leads to the deformation and failure of the slope. This paper proposes for the first time a method for evaluating bank slope rock mass deterioration. Through research and analysis, it is firstly determined that the main factors for evaluating the degradation of rock mass in the water level fluctuating zone are lithology and mineral composition characteristics, rock mass strength characteristics, rock mass rock group characteristics, bank slope structural characteristics, and hydrodynamic effects.Afterwards, the rock mass deterioration evaluation indicators are summarized into 13 refined indicators in three categories: basic factors, response factors, and inducing factors. Then the five-level classification of rock mass degradation was carried out,and the rock mass degradation evaluation method and evaluation standard were constructed. Finally, the degree of rock mass degradation is evaluated on different bank slopes. This evaluation method will strongly promote the study of slope degradation zone in the Three Gorges Reservoir area and the work of disaster prevention and mitigation.
