A simulation study of autonomous propulsive swimming behavior of crucian carp

Fishes have excellent swimming performance with high mobility, low energy consumption and high efficiency. In-depth study of fish swimming mechanism in various flow environments is of great significance for its bionic application and ecological protection. In this paper, the swimming processes of Crucian Carp in uniform flow and Karman vortex flow field were observed by high-speed photography, and the characteristic parameters and deformation expressions of fish body under different flow conditions were obtained by image processing and analysis. On this basis, a simulation technology was developed to study the fish autonomous propulsion swimming process using COMSOL Multiphysics software, which simulates the muscle contraction of fish by applying a prestrain on its body. Then the fish autonomous propulsion swimming processes in uniform flow and Karman vortex street were preliminarily studied using this technology. The calculated results of fish swimming velocity, motion pattern and surrounding flow structure are qualitatively consistent with the experimental results, which shows the application prospect of this method in further research of fish swimming. The coupling of fish body and surrounding flow field, kinematic characteristics and mechanical mechanism of fish in various flow fields can provide basic support for the prediction of fish swimming motion and trajectory in complex flow fields such as fishway.
