In recent years, the backflow phenomenon has frequently occurred at Taipingkou, one of the three outlets of the Jingjiang River, with a daily maximum backflow rate reaching up to 280 m³/s. Notably, the number of consecutive days with backflow has significantly increased in 2023. To investigate the causes and influencing factors of the backflow, this paper utilizes monitoring data from the control stations of Taipingkou and Mituosi Station along the Hudu River, in conjunction with water level variation processes upstream and downstream. A functional fitting approach is adopted for analysis. The research reveals a correlation between the flow rate at Mituosi Station under different water levels and factors such as the river-stage relationship at the station and the slope from Taipingkou to Mituosi Station, elucidating the conditions conducive to the occurrence of backflow. The research findings hold significant guidance for the scientific and rational implementation of hydrological monitoring at relevant stations and provide fundamental data support for the comprehensive improvement of the four-outlet water system in Dongting Lake and regional water resources allocation.
