Abstract—With high peak and small time constant, short-circuit current in flexible DC system is a challenge for DC circuit breaker (DCCB). Current-limiting device is needed to limit the fault current to the interruption capacity of DCCB, particularly to protect the electronic devices from the threaten of overcurrent. Combining superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) with DCCB to interrupt short-circuit current is one of the methods enhancing the interrupting capacity of DCCB. It can significantly reduce the current change rate (di/dt) borne by the vacuum switch. In this paper, to investigate the cooperation between the commutation branch of DCCB and the current limiting performance of SFCL, experimental model of SFCL and mechanical high-voltage DCCB is established. From the experimental results, the combination of SFCL and DCCB can reduce the pre-charge voltage of commutation capacitor nearly 30%, which can significantly decrease the parameter of commutation capacitor and reduce the cost of pre-charge system.
