This paper discusses the application of multiphysics simulation for the design phase of the load switch of an environmentally friendly gas-insulated switchgear. When air replaces sulfur hexafluoride as the insulation gas in gas-insulated switches, the difference in gas properties not only contributes to greater challenges to the insulation design of the load switch but also leads to an earlier pre-arcing time, bringing more challenges to the making design. A multiphysics model is realized for making design evaluation, while the principles and methods of multiphysics simulation technology in making design is discussed.

This study begins with the analysis of the electric field. First, based on the streamer criterion, the pre-arcing position is determined. Next, a multiphysics model is built for the arcing phase of the making stage, followed by an analysis and comparison of the simulation results. The study shows that the multiphysics simulation method provides good guidance for the design of environmentally-friendly gas-insulated load switches.
