Surface flashover phenomenon prevents vacuum interrupter from applying to higher voltage level. The surface flashover phenomenon in the vacuum interrupter begins at the shielding ring. At present, only through the geometric shape optimization of the shielding ring can not break through the insulation bottleneck of the high-voltage level vacuum interrupter. This paper innovatively proposes to apply dielectric coating on the end of the shielding ring to improve the dielectric strength of the vacuum interrupter. Flashover tests were carried out for samples changing the thickness of the dielectric coating and the roughness of the shield ring. The voltage and cathode current waveforms were measured under a positive standard lighting impulse. The field emission current is filtered out from the cathode current.
