This study aims to establish a theoretical understanding of the causes for different arc column sizes in different gases, such as in air and SF6.  It has been found that for low current arcs in strong axial gas flow, the radial temperature profile of the arc column is dominated, among different cooling mechanisms and properties, by the energy density of the gas as a function of temperature.
