Multi-Agent Perception Systems for Infrastructure Resilience

Abstract
Abstract---Today all live in a world of ageing infrastructure networks such as bridges, power systems, tunnels and transportation corridors, and there are increasing demands on these networks as a result of ageing infrastructure, weather events and increasing service demands. These single-sensor and single-agent monitoring systems are not able to provide a comprehensive, real-time view of the building's structure and operations. In this paper, a multi-agent perception system review and a multi-agent perception and sensing (MAPS) resilience-enabling layered architecture involving collaborative sensing, distributed intelligence, sensor fusion, edge-cloud collaboration, trust-aware decision-making, and digital twin synchronization, are presented. Fused perception, trust evolution, resilience scoring and communication latency/optimization of resources are modelled using five mathematical models. In five comparison tables and three experimental graphs, simulated benchmark scenarios support the statement that the proposed framework outperforms conventional centralized/federated frameworks in terms of the improvements gained in the perception accuracy, fault detection rate, and resilience score, while also showing reduced communication latency and energy consumption. Future directions and open research challenges are discussed in the end of the paper.
