Abstract
Electrochromic devices (ECDs) can reversibly change their optical properties under an applied voltage, thus having wide applications such as smart windows, displays, and dynamic camouflage. Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) combine the high ionic conductivity of liquid electrolytes with the high safety of solid-state electrolytes, making them an ideal choice for electrolytes. However, currently GPEs still have shortcomings such as poor ionic conductivity, poor mechanical properties, and lack of control of ionic transport1. Therefore, further research is needed to promote their practical application in ECDs.
In response to the performance requirements of electrolytes for ECDs, we controlled the ion transport and mechanical properties of GPEs by the design of polymer chains. We made the polymer participate in the solvation of lithium ions, helping them break away from excessive coordination with anions and facilitating their easier desolvation2. As a result, we achieved a lithium ions migration number exceeding 0.6 and an ionic conductivity of 4.6 mS/cm. Based on this, we also demonstrated the application of ECDs in smart windows, human body heat management, and energy storage devices.
