Introduction

Cloud computing provides industry and academy with a completely new paradigm of utilizing the computing infrastructure. Compute resources, storage resources, as well as applications, can be dynamically provisioned and integrated within the existing infrastructure in a pay-as-you-go style. This paradigm enables HPC to better meet workload demand, increase system utilization, and makes high performance computing resources accessible to a wider community. HPC deployed on clouds is becoming a main-stream solution offering almost unlimited storage and instantly available and scalable computing resources, all at a reasonable and metered cost. In this context, trustworthy cloud is in increasing demand. Although the research in trustworthy software has made tremendous progress in recent years, trustworthy cloud for HPC is still limited and preliminary. Cloud-based scientific and industrial computing still suffers from bugs, faults, failures, errors, instability, software/hardware aging, and other trustworthiness-related issues. This special issue aims at providing an in-depth discussion of the latest academic and industrial research findings of trustworthy cloud and is especially concerned with how model-driven (formal, stochastic, optimal-control, scheduling, verification, etc.) approaches can be used to address various needs arising from the area of trustworthy cloud computing systems.
