Introduction

Industry, nowadays, is trying to exploit the speed and frequency capabilities of electrical machines and drives and to maximize their energetic performances (i.e., efficiency and power factor). The advantage of high speed electrical machines is clear, especially for electric vehicle and power generation applications, due to the increased power density of the overall system. For example, in the car industry, the speed of electrical motor has doubled since ten years ago, and the trend in obvious, if we investigate the car’s performances. But what is the limit for the motor’s speed and of the frequency converter? Are the present power drives capable to offer the appropriate supply, even in high dynamic conditions? What will be the costs? And, finally, in what way the energetic performances of the entire system will be affected? This special session is intended to offer a platform of discussions on these topics, in order to find out about the new achievements and the trend in the field of optimized electrical machines and drives dedicated for EV and power generation applications.
