Improved Design of a single orifice thrust bearing for Helium Turbine Expander Based on CFD

Because of the small friction, non-pollution and cryogenic operation, the gas bearing is widely applied in the cryogenic helium turbine expander. In order to solve the problem that the thrust bearing does not adapt to the operating parameters change of a home-made turbine, the design of thrust bearing is improved. In this paper, the structure and operating parameters of single orifice annular thrust bearing are analyzed and optimized by using CFD numerical simulation method to maximize the bearing capacity and stiffness. The improved thrust bearing achieve stability requirements for the turbine.
