Study on the effect of different delignification methods on the structure and properties of balsa wood

With the advantages of low density, cheap and easy processing, balsa wood has been widely used for oil-water separation, sustainable


energy harvesting and flexible transparent wood. By delignification treatment of balsa wood, its porosity can be improved to further enhance


its properties. The common delignification methods include sodium chlorite, hydrogen peroxide, sodium sulfite and low eutectic solvents.


However, the effects of different delignification treatments on the structure and properties of balsa wood have not been thoroughly


investigated. Based on this, in this study, NaClO2, Na2SO3 /NaOH and ChCl/ lactic acid(LA) were used to remove lignin and investigate their


effects on the structure and properties of balsa wood in order to prepare wood films with both excellent mechanical properties and high pore


structure. This study provides some insights into the selection of a suitable method for delignification.
