In this study, a kind of novel waterborne hyperbranched polyacrylate (HBPA) dispersed emulsion organo-montmorillonite (OMMT) was synthesized in laboratory. The emulsion was used to treat wood via impregnation. Simultaneously, the polyhydric alcohols such as poly (ethyl glycol), polyvinyl alcohol, glycerol, were mixed with the emulsion during impregnation. The physical and mechanical properties of the modified wood were tested. The results showed that the OMMT were successfully exfoliated in the HBPA emulsion. After impregnating and heating, the OMMT penetrated into the wood cell walls with part of HBPA particles. The other part of HBPA formed a layer of film covering on the wood cell wall surface. Besides, the end groups of HBPA crosslinked with the polyhydric alcohols by physical twining, hydrogen bonds and transesterification reaction. Therefore, the water absorption decreased, and the dimensional stability and mechanical strength increased significantly. This provided a relative green modification for the fast-growing wood.
