Abstract
Lignocellulosic biomass-derived nanocellulose has been attracting more and more attentions due to its distinguished advantages and various applications, but its development has been restricted by the preparation especially with environmental friendly approach. The use of lignin-containing feedstock can not only reduce chemicals dosages and energy consumption, but also bring higher yield, and lower costs, consequently producing lignin-containing nanofibrils (LCNF). Meanwhile, the remaining of lignin can improve the polar nature and thermal stability of resultant cellulose due to its nonpolar hydrocarbon and benzene groups. LCNF not only maintains the advantages of CNF such as excellent mechanical properties, biodegradability, and biocompatibility, but also exhibits better thermal stability, hydrophobicity, and antioxidant properties. In addition, different plants, locations, and processing methods ensure lignin various characteristics, thus LCNF with different properties can be obtained by designing the process and conditions. Herein, the different fabrication methods of lignin-containing cellulose nanofibrils will be summarized. The applications of LCNF will be further discussed. It is expected that LCNF will exhibit many potential applications such as nanocomposites, conductive hydrogels, energy storage, reinforcing agent in films.
