Thermal, mechanical and CMAS corrosion resistant properties of novel YbTaO4 thermal barrier coatings

YbTaO4 was investigated as the potential novel thermal barrier material to enhance the CMAS corrosion resistance of YSZ TBCs for aeroengine or space engine. Research results indicate that the thermal conductivity(800℃), thermal expansion coefficient(1000℃), and fracture toughness of YbTaO4 is ~58%, ~75%, and ~41% than that of YSZ, respectively. Moreover, the wettability of YbTaO4 is worse than YSZ, which can enhance the CMAS corrosion resistance of TBCs at real operating environment. YbTaO4 exhibits excellent CMAS corrosion resistance, the reaction layer thickness at 1250℃ and 1350℃ after 10 h reaction is ~5μm and ~ 13μm, which is significantly thinner than thickness of YSZ after CMAS corrosion(~ 450μm, 4h). In summary, YbTaO4 is a kind of potential novel thermal material to replace or protect YSZ.
