In laser clad-repairing processing, a reasonable processing technology is the key to achieving good metallurgical bonding and improving the automation level of on-site repair. The commonly used repair method currently is manual welding, which can lead to complex repair processes, uneven repair quality, and personnel injuries. This study proposed a surface cladding repair method combined pulsed laser pre-scanning with cladding (PLSC). The method was tested on Q345R pressure vessel plates using Inconel625 metal powder. The macroscopic and microscopic surface morphology after laser pre-scanning was observed. Compared with the traditional manual polishing then laser cladding process (TMPC), the hardness, tensile strength, and impact resistance of the specimens were tested under two different processes. The results indicate that the cladding layer of the PLSC specimens has better metallurgical bonding with the substrate, further leading to better hardness, tensile strength, and impact resistance than the TMLC and the original substrate.
