Deposition of atmospheric nitrogen, which is sourced from surface emissions of reactive nitrogen gases, has large impacts on land and ocean ecosystem. International trade is contributing to the globalization of emissions as a result of producing goods in one region for consumption in another region. The effects of global trade on the environment has been investigated, however, assessment of the global nitrogen depostion related to international trade is lacking. Here we combined several models to quantify the global and regional nitrogen deposition from the production and consumption of goods in diffrent regions for the year 2017. Our results found that the transboundary nitrogen depositions emboided in international trade are larger than deposition from atmospheric transport and quantified the extent to which nitrogen deposition is a global problem.
