Satellite tracking devices were installed on nesting, rescued and artificial bred sea turtles in Huidong protected area. The data revealed that a key migration corridor along near shore shallow waters utilized by sea turtles around Huidong, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Preliminary investigations using remote sensing techniques have discovered a large number of stationary pound nets in the key migration corridor, posing a huge threat to the sea turtles, and is believed to be the main factor contributing to the drastic reduction of nesting sea turtles in these areas. Recommendations include strengthening regulation and management of fishing gears / practices to promote conservation and sustainable development of marine resources in China.
