Abstract
The GF-2 and SuperView-1 satellites, launched by China in 2014 and 2016, offer spatial resolutions of 4 m and 2 m in visible and near-infrared bands. While widely applied across various fields, their suitability for oceanographic research has not been thoroughly assessed. In this study, we use data from Sentinel-2, known for its high calibration accuracy and advanced technical capabilities, as a reference to evaluate the performance of GF-2 and SuperView-1. We calculated the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the GF-2, SuperView-1, and Sentinel-2 sensors to preliminarily assess their data quality. We also conducted cross-comparisons of top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance among these sensors. The results demonstrate that the SNR of both Chinese satellites, GF-2 and SuperView-1, meets the requirements of water quality monitoring in the visible spectrum. Additionally, GF-2 showed a higher concordance with Sentinel-2' s TOA reflectance compared to SuperView-1. After applying a linear correction, TOA data from both Chinese sensors aligned more closely with Sentinel-2, effectively reducing systematic biases in the visible bands. This harmonization is crucial for improving the interoperability and comparability of multi-source satellite data. Recognizing the remaining discrepancies between GF-2, SuperView-1, and Sentinel-2, we emphasize the need for data transformations when utilizing GF-2 and SuperView-1 in comparative oceanographic studies. This study improves the accuracy of Chinese high-resolution sensors data and lays a foundation for advancing the use of Chinese satellite data in marine ecosystems.
