Abstract
This presentation outlines a collaborative research initiative conducted in Chumphon, Thailand, aimed at engaging local communities and citizen scientists in marine conservation efforts. The project focused on the critical role of coastal zones as breeding grounds for fish populations and sought to address specific marine science questions identified by the local community. Representatives of the ECOP Thailand, Greenpeace, local leaders, and government officials in Pathio District laid the groundwork for the collaboration and discussed the importance of the region's coastal zones and explored opportunities for joint research projects. Following the meeting, an ECOP research team embarked on a field study aboard the "Rainbow Warrior," Greenpeace's flagship vessel. The research focused on the plankton community, with particular emphasis on the larvae and eggs of economically important fish species. This citizen science initiative provided a platform for local residents to actively participate in scientific research and contribute to the understanding of marine ecosystems. The collaboration between environmental organizations, local communities, and government agencies demonstrates the potential for effective partnerships in addressing marine conservation challenges. By involving citizen scientists, the project not only generated valuable scientific data but also fostered a sense of ownership and stewardship among local residents.
