Introduction

The 2nd National Academic Symposium on Analytical Mechanics for Young Scholars was successfully held in Suzhou from December 13 to 16, 2024. The symposium was sponsored by the Dynamics and Control Committee of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, and co-organized by Suzhou University of Science and Technology, Suzhou Society of Mechanics, Jiangsu Society of Mechanics, and the Dynamics and Control Committee of Jiangsu Society of Mechanics. Prof. Yongxin Guo (Liaoning University) served as Conference Chair, and Prof. Yueyu Zhao (Hunan University) served as Academic Committee Chair. Vice President Shijun Sun of Suzhou University of Science and Technology attended and delivered an opening address. Over 100 renowned experts and young scholars in dynamics and control from nearly 40 universities across China participated, including Prof. Jian Xu (Tongji University), Prof. Qi Wang (Beihang University), Prof. Caishan Liu (Peking University), Prof. Qiang Tian (Beijing Institute of Technology), Prof. Xinsheng Ge (Beijing Information Science and Technology University), Prof. Rubin Wang (East China University of Science and Technology), Prof. Dengqing Cao (Harbin Institute of Technology), Prof. Hu Ding (Shanghai University), Prof. Xiaodong Yang (Beijing University of Technology), Prof. Haijun Peng (Dalian University of Technology), Prof. Xiaohua Zhao (Zhejiang Normal University), Prof. Hanwen Song (Tongji University), Prof. Qinsheng Bi (Jiangsu University), Prof. Houjun Kang (Guangxi University), Prof. Tieding Guo (Tongji University), and Prof. Zhimei Lou (Shaoxing University).

The opening ceremony was moderated by Prof. Yi Zhang (Suzhou University of Science and Technology), Chair of the Analytical Mechanics Group under the Dynamics and Control Committee. Prof. Guo delivered the keynote speech, highlighting the foundational importance of analytical mechanics across physics, mechanics, and engineering sciences; expressing gratitude to the Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the Dynamics and Control Committee for their long-term support; encouraging young scholars; and thanking Suzhou University of Science and Technology for its dedicated organization. Prof. Xu, Standing Council Member of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and Deputy Director of the Dynamics and Control Committee, extended congratulations and proposed four strategic suggestions for future development: (1) strengthening talent cultivation; (2) advancing theoretical and applied research; (3) simplifying complex mathematical theories effectively to lower entry barriers and attract more young researchers; and (4) promoting interdisciplinary integration with related fields.

Vice President Sun introduced the history and recent achievements of Suzhou University of Science and Technology—especially in faculty development, discipline construction, and program building—and extended warm welcome and sincere appreciation to all participants and supporters.

The symposium featured five invited talks by Prof. Shixing Liu (Liaoning University), Prof. Haijun Peng (Dalian University of Technology), Prof. Sha Wei (Shanghai University), Prof. Shilei Han (Beijing Institute of Technology), and Prof. Xuefeng Wang (Peking University), covering topics including modern geometric numerical integration, dynamics and control of bio-inspired continuum robots, non-probabilistic uncertainty quantification, model order reduction from 3D nonlinear elasticity to 1D geometrically nonlinear beams, and robust disturbance-rejection control of two-wheeled robots based on reduced-order models—eliciting enthusiastic responses.

A total of 49 oral presentations were delivered, addressing diverse topics such as geometric dynamics and control of constrained systems, numerical methods for constrained mechanical systems, description and regulation of motion in non-holonomic deformable bodies, analytical mechanics modeling of complex dynamical systems, symmetries and conserved quantities in constrained systems, applications in aerospace and robotics, and interdisciplinary studies. The breadth and depth of contributions demonstrated outstanding research outcomes and vibrant scholarly engagement among young researchers, signaling a promising future for talent succession and disciplinary advancement in analytical mechanics in China.

The symposium received strong support and meticulous organization from the leadership, Science & Technology Office, and School of Civil Engineering of Suzhou University of Science and Technology, achieving full success. It was announced that the 3rd symposium will be hosted by Northwestern Polytechnical University in 2026.
