Introduction
The 6th ISPIM Innovation Symposium – Innovation in the Asian Century – will be held in Melbourne, Australia on 8 -11 December 2013. Organised by ISPIM, and hosted by the Victorian Universities Innovation Management Network (VUIMN), this event will bring together around 250 innovation experts from 35 countries. The three-day programme includes: Industry-Leading Keynote Speakers; Luminary Speakers; "Innovation for Business" Sessions; "Hot Topic" Roundtable Discussions; Facilitated Themed Sessions with Academic and Practitioner Presentations; Workshops; Special Interest Groups; Academic Research Development Sessions. The final day of the event is dedicated to "Innovation in Victoria" and includes Company Visits, Presentations, Discussion Panels and Workshops. As with all ISPIM events, delegates will experience a taste of local culture at magnificent dinner venues such as the famous MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground), so there will be plenty of time for networking. The lingering problems of the global financial crisis continue to frustrate economic growth, and much has been made of the claim that businesses need to innovate in order to remain competitive. Similarly, many governments are now looking to the Asia-Pacific region as the principal engine for economic growth and innovative expansion. In a recent White Paper, the Commonwealth Government of Australia identified Asia as a core pillar in its own economic strategy. In recognising the importance of this economic and social transformation, the 2013 ISPIM Innovation Symposium focuses on “Innovation in the Asian Century”. The Symposium asks some very tough questions: How does this change in focus impact global business innovation and competiveness? What types of innovation frameworks and models will maximise Asia’s/the Pacific Region’s potential? How can businesses, governments and educational institutions adapt to this change in focus? What are the prospects for Asia/the Pacific Region driving innovation globally? How sustainable is the ‘Asian Century’, and what does it really mean for businesses, governments and educational institutions, both inside and outside Asia.
