Introduction
Extracting insights from large sensing systems, including network and compute sensors, environmental sensors, and personal sensors (e.g. phones, social media), requires a joint understanding of the design and deployment of large sensing infrastructures, along with the management and analysis of the collected data. The First International Workshop on Sensing and Big Data Mining (SenseMine 2013) is a new forum established to bring together researchers, practitioners, and academics in the fields of sensor networks, distributed systems, and data mining and machine learning, with the goal of driving cross-disciplinary research in support of these emerging application requirements. Through a series of peer reviewed papers, invited talks, and panel discussions, SenseMine is designed to engage the research community in sharing results that bring together sensing, systems, and big data analytic techniques, that will drive the development of large sensing system based solutions.
