Introduction
The 2014 Metals in Medicine GRC conference will take place in the tranquil setting of Proctor Academy in the heart of the New Hampshire countryside in June 2014. This prestigious conference will provide an international forum for the presentation and discussion of frontier research in medicinal inorganic chemistry, with an emphasis on new unpublished results. The 2014 program will have a particular focus on defining what the future of medicinal inorganic chemistry will be and has attracted an outstanding scientific line-up. Featured topics will include recent developments in metal-based imaging agents for nuclear medicine, MRI, CT, and optical (fluorescence) imaging; the role of metal complexes in DNA/RNA recognition; the pharmacology of metal-based drugs; and metal-containing nanomaterials as drugs ("Nano-Day"). Also featured will be discussions of the history and future of metallopharmaceuticals and the latest developments in platinum-based anticancer drugs. This Conference will include a strong emphasis on exciting work by new investigators; three early career attendees will be chosen to give oral presentations based on the abstracts of the poster submissions and six postdoctoral fellows and graduate students will be chosen to give brief oral presentations during the afternoon poster sessions. Taken together, the 2014 Metals in Medicine program will provide multiple opportunities for all attendees to exchange ideas with leaders in the field as well as outstanding younger scientists. In addition, the collegial atmosphere of this Conference, which provides multiple opportunities for informal discussions in the afternoon and evenings, provides an ideal forum for attendees to brainstorm as well as to develop cross-disciplinary collaborations.
