Introduction

After a decade of extensive research on application-specific wireless sensor networks, the recent development of information and communication technologies makes it practical to realize software-defined sensor networks (SDSNs), which are able to adapt various application requirements and to fully explore the computation and communication resources. Many emerging technologies such as software defined radio, over-the-air programming, field programmable gate array, cloud computing, etc., are available to realize the vision of SDSNs from a diversity of aspects, from the physical layer to the application layer. However, how to harness the benefits of these technologies towards SDSNs is still in its infancy. Many challenging are still faced and it is significant to tackle them.
