Problems that transcend a variety of strongly coupled time and length scales are ubiquitous in materials science. Those multiscale problems pose major mathematical challenges in terms of modeling, analysis and simulation. At the same time, advances in the development of multiscale mathematical methods coupled with continually increasing computing power have provided scientists with the unprecedented opportunity to study complex behavior and model systems over a wide range of scales.
