Introduction

The political economy of capital is a lasting topic. Capital in the Twenty-First Century by Thomas Piketty once again set off the debate, which suggests a return of critical perspective in the analysis of capital and an interesting contrast to the optimism in the emerging economies including China. Massive inflow of foreign direct investment has been one of the engines of China’s economic growth and social transformation. With the creation of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), it is believed that China is actively using her financial resources to shape the region and even the world, which is deemed to arouse and has aroused a lot of debates. With “Economic and Politics: the Power of Capital” as the theme, this workshop seeks to serve as an international platform for in-depth scholarly discussion on the political economy of capital and prepare for a special section in the journal Economic and Political Studies.
