Introduction

Metamaterials and artificial electromagnetic media that are structured on the subwavelength scale were initially suggested for the negative-index ‘superlens’. Later, as metamaterials became a paradigm for engineering electromagnetic space and controlling the propagation of waves, the field of transformation optics was born. The research agenda is now shifting towards achieving tunable, switchable, nonlinear, sensing and data processing functionalities. This heralds the emergence of the new fields of metadevices and metasystems with unique and useful functionalities, realized by the structuring of functional matter on the subwavelength scale. In 2014, the conference has evolved from the SPIE Conference “Metamaterials: Fundamentals and Applications” and now broadens its remit. It will be a platform to discuss cutting-edge research on photonic, terahertz, microwave, acoustic and mechanical metamaterials, metadevices and metasystems with advanced functionalities attained through the exploitation of the entire plethora of classical and quantum mesoscale and nanoscale forces and interactions.
