Introduction

The purpose of this conference is to provide a technical forum for discussions on the latest developments in quantum information science and technology. Quantum information is a broad area of study regarding the information processing tasks that can be accomplished using quantum mechanical systems. Contributing disciplines include quantum mechanics, information theory, computer science, and cryptography. Applications include quantum computation, quantum cryptography, quantum imaging, and quantum sensing.

Quantum technologies are potentially transformational to security and defence. Progress in quantum computing research threatens classical techniques for encryption key sharing that rely on computational complexity for security. Quantum-physics-based approaches to key sharing are theoretically unbreakable based on mathematical proofs integrating information theory with principles of quantum mechanics. Advancements in quantum technologies have led to the commercialization of quantum cryptographic systems, particularly for fiber network applications.

There are, however, many challenges to developing quantum technologies to a position where they can provide robust capabilities in defence applications. These include the development of quantum networks, fiber and free-space quantum channels, photon sources and detectors, integrated photonics for quantum circuits, quantum memories, quantum gates, quantum relays, and quantum repeaters.
