Numerical modelling, including process-based modelling and flume tank studies, has been used extensively over the last decades to study sediment movement, depositional processes and resulting (ancient) stratal architectures. These approaches have traditionally been challenged by our ability to integrate modelling results with reality, temporal and spatial scaling issues, subsurface data conditioning as well as our ability to extract quantitative data from these numerical models. However, the development of more mature 3D numerical models and the advance of larger computers have overcome some of the disadvantages.
