Introduction

1st Workshop: Advances of Social Networks for Life Science Workshop ASNAL - 2016 The widespread use of social media offers powerful tools for life scientists to better understand relationships, causality, public opinions, perceptions, and the communications among social media communities and their structures. Some of the most significant contributions were made in the biomedical domain where topics such as drug side effects, smoking cessation, and health behavior. Exploration of biodiversity, and climate change, and environmental issues have recently been aided by social media analysis. Though the work that has been done addressing such important topics is impressive, its use is still limited and in its infancy. In this workshop, we hope to advance the use of social media to address life science research questions. The objective of this workshop is to advance the current knowledge of social network data from various point of view:

  • Expanding the discovery of knowledge in health behavior, drug interaction/side effects, and disease causality

  • Assessing the extinction status of endangered species by monitoring and mining social media data

  • Understanding the impact of climate change on humans health and biodiversity and their ecosystems

  • Designing Big Data cyberinfrastructure that supports scientific workflows that are entirely based on social media data and networks

  • Exploring the various data networks in terms of their structures and patterns demonstrated

  • Designing new network mining algorithms for Big Data networks
