Introduction

Sophisticated laser systems are increasingly being used for information gathering and sharing. These systems satisfy many critical needs in sensing and high bandwidth free space optical (FSO) communications. We are coming into the age where laser systems are a viable competitor to RF systems for many applications. Application of Lasers for Sensing & Free Space Communication (LS&C) reports on the latest use of lasers in diverse fields such as quantum technologies, environmental sensing, remote imaging, close-in inspection, and medical diagnostics. LS&C seeks to merge enabling research with application needs. It will especially highlight means by which quantum protocols can enhance the performance of applications such as remote sensing and free-space communication. Challenges common both to sensing and to communication systems, such as atmospheric effects, are also of strong interest. In addition to applications and systems, this meeting also covers: enabling technologies that are often common to diverse laser-based systems advances in sources waveform/wavefront modulation techniques receivers, optical apertures, and post-detection processing schemes.
