Introduction

Chemical looping concept is based on the use of materials with oxidation‐reduction cycle that can either oxidize or reduce fuel. The required oxygen to convert fuel is provided by a redox material, eliminating the need of conventional air separation units. Its process was investigated to provide clean and efficient solutions for energy and environment, such as combustion, hydrogen production, gasification, reforming and waste disposal.

Carbonate looping is a very efficient post combustion CO2 capture technology with lowest energy demand and CO2 mitigation cost compared to other post combustion CCS processes.CO2 contained in the flue gas is absorbed by carbon carrier (solid sorbent) and released in aregenerator.

In recent years, researches have mainly been focused on oxygen/carbon carrier materials, reactor concepts, potential applications and emission control. The process has been investigated in several pilot plants at different scales, from lab scale test rigs to a semi-industrial scale. Theresearch involves different kinds of fuels, such as gaseous, liquid and solid fuel, and a number of different oxygen/carbon carrier materials.

The 1st international conference on Chemical Looping was hosted by Dr. Thierry Gauthier inIFP-Lyon, France in 2010. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernd Epple hosted the 2nd conference at TechnischeUniversität Darmstadt, Germany in 2012. And Prof. Anders Lyngfelt was responsible for the 3rd conference at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden in 2014.
