Introduction

The field of education is currently undergoing extensive evolution involving internet- and distance-based learning environments. New types of learning environments such asvirtual classrooms, distance laboratories and new learning methodologies p r e s e n t  newproblems that w ill  need to be addressed. Traditional learning environments are in many cases being replaced  with these  new technologies. Machine Learning can be us ed to provide new solutions to problems presented b y thes e  new learning and teachingtechnologies. I t  can be applied in many educational areas to facilitate new methods andlearning environments.
Machine learning involves a variety of techniques that are applicable to solving problems ineducation. Some example applications include: prediction of learning success in vocationaland technical education, determination of effective learning methods, using social media foreducational purposes, and so on.
The aim of this special session is to obtain perspective into the current state of the practice ofmachine learning applications i n addressing problems a r i s i n g  in education.
