Introduction

To pursue its aim of fostering the dialectic of theory and practice that Professor MAK Halliday has envisioned as 'appliable linguistics', the Martin Centre for Appliable Linguistics at Shanghai Jiao Tong University has successfully organized three international conferences on an annual basis, each focusing on one of the Centre's key research foci - academic discourse (2014), functional language typology (2015), and legal discourse (2016). In 2017, the Centre will host its fourth international conference, which is dedicated to 'appliable linguistics and translation studies', from 16 to 19 July. The conference will consist of three and a half days of plenary speeches, keynote speeches, parallel sessions and workshops.
