Research on the application of traveling wave protection in hybrid HVDC transmission line protection
Traveling wave protection,Fault simulation,Hybrid DC system,Applicability analysis
Draft Accepted
Typical protection principles in HVDC projects are summarized in this paper and the WFPDL traveling wave (TW) protection criterion applied to TianGuang DC project and the TW protection scheme of ABB Company in SanGuang DC project are selected to be studied whether they are suitable for the DC line protection of double-ended hybrid DC system. The polar-to-ground short-circuit fault of the DC line in a hybrid double-ended bipolar HVDC transmission system was simulated on the PSCAD/EMTDC platform. The influences of the fault location as well as the grounding resistance for the fault waveforms were considered. A large number of transient fault data are processed and analyzed to design the setting values of protections by MATLAB. We found that the current traveling wave protection schemes commonly used in DC project can quickly detect the DC line faults, while they cannot accurately select the pole for the pole-to-ground fault and are insensitive to High grounding resistance failure.
